Time required: 1–2 minutes

Equipment needed: Chair, stopwatch, tape measure, and tape

Falls risk criteria: A time of 12 or more seconds indicates an increased risk of falls

The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test assesses function, mobility, and dynamic balance, and measures the time taken for a person to rise from a chair, walk three metres at a normal pace with their usual assistive device, turn, return to the chair and sit down. The total time taken to complete the task indicates the level of falls risk.

Individuals completing the TUG Test should wear their usual footwear and use a walking aid if needed. The use of a walking aid or upper limbs to provide support should be noted as part of the assessment.

It is recommended that this test be undertaken by a trained health professional.
