National Road Safety Week- Drive So Others Survive

This year, it was WA’s turn to host National Road Safety Week, which was launched on Sunday 14th May at Government House in Perth. The event bought together those working in the road safety sector and individuals who have impacted by road trauma in WA.

Guest speaker Peter Fraser spoke on the evening about his daughter who was killed in an avoidable road crash on the Hume Freeway south of Sydney. Peter discussed the advocacy work he’s led since, to improve road safety outcomes. You can find out more about Peter and the work he is part of here. The Road Safety Commission hosted the event and put together a video of the Launch which can be viewed here.

An inaugural ‘Road Safety Starts With Me’ Youth Summit was launched during this year’s National Road Safety Week, with just under 800 students gathering at the Convention Centre. The event aimed to lead year 10 to 12 students on a learning journey, developing road safety awareness and skills across a range of scenarios.

Our team attended the event to provide mental health first aid support and to be part of the day’s Marketplace to promote the Road Trauma Support program ensuring those attending knew where they could go for support after a car crash. We found the engagement across the day from young people truly heart-warming with their curiosity and openness to learn more about the role they can play in road safety.

The Road Safety Commission encourages everyone to take the Road Safety Pledge – sharing what you’ll do in your day-to-day life to make the roads safer for yourself and for others. The Injury Matters team took time to write their pledges both online and in the office.

We strive to be culturally sensitive as we represent the Western Australian community in our imagery.
