Spotlight: Black Swan Health, Men of Hope

April 19, 2021

The 2021 Injury Matters Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Awards provided an opportunity to recognise the vital role of organisations who are providing services aiming to reduce further harm following an acute injury in WA.

This year’s winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Injury Recovery Award was the Black Swan Health Men of Hope program.

David Beattie (Injury Matters), Grace Terina (Black Swan Health), Gerhard Rousseau (Black Swan Health), and Sandy Lukjanowski (Injury Matters).

Men of Hope is an initiative that supports men who are experiencing mental health and wellbeing issues. The program supports these men by providing them with an opportunity to regularly connect in an informal and safe setting.

With a vision of “Get In, Get Healthy, Get Strong and Get Going”, Men of Hope aims to address social isolation amongst at-risk men, alleviating the burden of taking that first step to connecting with others.

Men experiencing mental health and wellbeing issues can find it difficult to access the support network needed to help them make positive changes in their lives. This can result in feelings of hopelessness, a loss of connectedness with their community and a lack of purpose, which is what Men of Hope works to alleviate and assist in injury recovery.

Activities are facilitated, guided by the Recovery Model, to support participants to build relationships, build self-esteem and exercise self-care. Examples of these activities include; music, cooking, and coffee and cake groups. Men of Hope works to restore self-worth and purpose for all participants by supporting those who might feel marginalised by society.

Men of Hope is a true grassroots program making a difference. Congratulations to Black Swan Health and the Men of Hope team for winning the 2021 Outstanding Achievement in Injury Recovery Award.
