Meet the Remove Hazards 2025 grant recipients

With the next Stay On Your Feet® Remove Hazards campaign launching in March 2025, Injury Matters congratulates the successful grant recipients who have commenced planning their community-based falls prevention grant programs.

Remove Hazards is one part of the Move Improve Remove messaging that encourages older adults to stay active, independent, and prevent falls. Remove Hazards looks at simple changes for preventing falls, focusing on home safety, eye health and foot health to prevent falls and promote healthy ageing.

Men’s Shed WA

Men’s Shed WA will be addressing home safety and falls prevention through a Roadshow across Perth and regional Western Australia from March-May 2025. Here’s what they will be delivering:

  • The Roadshow will visit 9 regions, hosting Health Expos with Men’s Shed representatives from over 90 Men’s Sheds, reaching over 300 participants.
  • Building the capacity of Men’s Shed WA Health and Wellbeing officers to continue to share falls prevention strategies within their Men’s Shed post grant period.
  • Occupational Therapists delivering education on home safety and falls prevention.
  • Developing a resource for each Men’s Shed with details for local Optometrists, Occupational Therapists, and Podiatrists, encouraging Shedders to seek further support.

Nurse Next Door

The Nurse Next Door will deliver a program to raise awareness and knowledge about home safety, eye health, and foot health to prevent falls. Running from March to April 2025, the project will include:

  • Series of interactive workshops led by local Podiatrists, Optometrists, and Occupational Therapists across Belmont, Vic Park, South Perth, and City of Canning local government areas.
  • A co-designed workshop with Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older adults.
  • Distribution of practical take-home Remove Hazards kits to help support the implementation of falls prevention strategies learnt throughout the program.

Connect Vic Park

Connect Vic Park will deliver a series of falls prevention workshops for older adults in their community from April to May 2025. Focusing on eye health, foot health and home safety, the project will include:

  • Three weekly workshops on home safety, eye health, and foot health, led by a podiatrist and a local optometrist.
  • Three balance and strength classes conducted by a qualified fitness instructor incorporating how to get up off the floor safely.
  • Distribution of Remove Hazards practical resource kits following the grant program.
  • Training Falls Prevention Ambassadors within their Village Hub to continue falls prevention education beyond the grant period.
